ATHENS, GA — The University of Georgia’s Performing Arts Center is getting a new name in honor of former university President Charles Knapp and his wife, Lynne.
The Board of Regents approved UGA’s request to name the facility after the couple, recognizing their decades of philanthropy, leadership and service to the university.
University officials say the naming also recognizes a significant gift from the Knapps that will support the future of music and the performing arts at UGA.
Charles Knapp served as UGA’s president from 1987 to 1997. During his tenure, he helped lead the development of the $34 million performing arts complex.
The couple’s investment will allow the center to undergo modernization and updates aimed at attracting professional musicians and creating networking and mentoring opportunities.
A dedication ceremony is expected to take place sometime this fall.
