UGA releases statement, launches probe into deadly crash

University of Georgia athletic director Josh Brooks says the athletic department is, with University lawyers, conducting an investigation into the crash that claimed the lives of Bulldog football player Devin Willock and UGA recruiting staffer Chandler LeCroy. Two others—another player and another recruiting office employee—were injured in the wreck that happened ten days ago on Barnett Shoals Road in Athens.

The University of Georgia has announced they reviewing the circumstances surrounding a car crash that killed a football player and a team staffer.

Devin Willock, 20, and Chandler LeCroy, 24, were killed just hours after the Bulldogs celebrated their second consecutive National Championship win with a parade through downtown Athens.

Police said LeCroy was speeding when the rented SUV carrying four people lost control on Barnett Shoals Road early on the morning of Jan. 10.

Willock was ejected from the car and died on impact. LeCroy died at the hospital. Two other passengers, another UGA football player and another recruitment staffer, were also injured in the crash.

It’s unclear what the group was doing in the hours before the crash. Investigators have said they are still awaiting results from toxicology and other tests to see if any other factors contributed to the crash.

On Tuesday, the university released a statement saying that they have refrained from making any public comments regarding the circumstances of the crash out of respect for the families.

“However, we want the public to know that the athletic department is conducting a thorough review, in coordination with appropriate legal counsel, to fully understand the circumstances surrounding this tragic event. We want to emphasize that these individuals were not engaged in Athletic Department duties around the time of this incident.”

In the statement, UGA Director of Athletics J. Reid Parker went on to say that the university is cooperating with law enforcement.

“Coach Smart and I are also actively reviewing relevant football policies, and at the conclusion of that review, we will take steps to implement any improvements in our policies and procedures that may be needed. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the families and friends of all those impacted by this tragic event.”
