Vandals strike archeological site in NE Ga

Vandals strike a historic site in northeast Georgia.

The U.S. Forest Service is looking for those who caused irreparable damage to an archaeological site in the Chattahoochee National Forest in Union County.

In a Facebook post this week, officials say Native American rock carvings dating back a thousand years at Track Rock Gap have been scratched and painted over and damaged beyond repair.

Authorities acknowledge the vandalism could have taken place sometime last year during the pandemic. The Forest Service says when people destroy historic sites part of the nation’s heritage is lost forever.
