Voters settle runoff elections today

Today is election day in Athens and around the state, with an Athens Democrat on runoff election ballots: former Athens-Clarke County Commissioner and former US Congressman John Barrow is running for Secretary of State against Republican Brad Raffensperger. The polls that open at 7 o’clock this morning will close at 7 o’clock tonight, with voters also deciding the race for a seat on the Georgia Public Service Commission: Republican Chuck Eaton is challenged by Democrat Lindy Miller.

Today is a special election day in Georgia's 28th House District: incumbent Republican Dan Gasaway will try to hold off a challenge from former Banks County School Superintendent Chris Erwin in an election do-over that was ordered by a judge after some voters in the May 22 primary election were given incorrect ballots, and thus voted in the wrong district. Erwin won that earlier contest by a 67-vote margin. The 28th District includes parts of Banks, Stephens, and Habersham counties.

On this runoff election day is an afternoon meeting of the Athens-Clarke County Board of Elections: it's a 3 o'clock session at the Elections Office on Washington Street. Barrow County's Board of Elections meets at 3:30 this afternoon in Winder.
