Man killed in workplace accident on Athens’ west side

A man from Murray County is killed in a workplace accident in Athens: Athens-Clarke County Police say Dustin Jenkins was 27 years old, from Chatsworth. He was run over by a dump truck at a work site off Tallassee Road. Jenkins died after being taken to a hospital in Athens. An Athens-Clarke County Police investigation is ongoing.

On May 19, 2021 at 9:24 am, the Athens-Clarke County Police Department responded to a vehicle crash involving a pedestrian at an active construction site next to the intersection of Tallassee Road near Westchester Drive.

The initial investigation revealed that an asphalt truck, driven by Bobby Freeman (50 YOA, male, Lithonia, GA), had emptied its load and was backing down a road under construction. As this was happening, a construction worker, identified as Dustin Jenkins (27 YOA, male, Chatsworth, GA), was painting the roadway. Mr. Jenkins had his back to the dump truck. The dump truck struck Mr. Jenkins, causing severe injury. EMS was transporting him to a local hospital when he succumbed to his injuries.

This is the 12th fatality crash in Athens-Clarke County in 2021.
