NE Ga police blotter: Jackson Co jail guard fired, Elbert Co shooting suspect arrested

53 year-old John Pursley has been fired from his job as a Jackson County jail guard. There is a GBI investigation into allegations that he assaulted inmates at the jail in Jefferson.

The Elbert County Sheriff’s Office has arrested a suspect in a shooting that happened earlier this month: Vontavious Newman is charged in the May 4 shooting that sent an Elberton man to an Athens hospital with what were described as non-life threatening injuries.

Hall County drug agents say they wrapped up a month-long investigation with the arrest of a Gainesville man: 40 year-old Milton Marshall is accused of trafficking in cocaine and methamphetamine. He is also facing weapons charges.

A Gwinnett County man gets a life sentence in Hall County: 32 year-old Anthony Williams was convicted on child molestation charges in Gainesville, found guilty on allegations involving a 10 year-old girl in a case dating back to 2019.

The Georgia State Patrol is investigating the accident that claimed the life of a Rockdale County Sheriff’s Deputy: State Troopers say Walter Jenkins (pictured) was directing traffic on Highway 138 near Conyers when he struck was by an SUV. He died after being taken to Grady Hospital in Atlanta. Jenkins was 54 years old; the driver of the vehicle that hit him is 16. It’s not clear if she will face charges.
