Spirit Airlines plans to lay off 270 pilots this fall as part of a broader effort to reduce costs by trimming its off-season flight schedule. The budget carrier also announced it will downgrade more than 100 pilots from captain to first officer effective October 1.

The airline has struggled to regain profitability since emerging from Chapter 11 bankruptcy in March.

Spirit has not yet commented on how the layoffs may impact specific routes or markets.
