We have today the name of the Jefferson County teenager who died in last week’s accident at a rock quarry in Jackson County: Brian Thigpen was 16 years old. OSHA is investigating at the Vulcan Materials Rock Quarry in Jefferson, where the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office says Thigpen was crushed to death by a piece of machinery that overturned and landed on top of him.

From WSB TV…

A Georgia teen died Friday after an accident at a local rock quarry.

The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to the Vulcan Materials Rock Quarry around 1:12 p.m.

When they arrived, they found a 16-year-old pinned under a piece of machinery.

Deputies said it appeared the machinery was in operation when it turned over on top of the teen.

The Jackson County Coroner’s Office has identified the teen as Brian Thigpen.

Channel 2 Action News talked to his mother, Patty Thigpen, who said that her son was not the typical teenage boy. He was working with an excavating company contracting with the company for the summer.

“He saw me struggling being a single parent and wanted better for us,” Thigpen said. “He would help anyone that needed help with anything and asked for nothing in return.”

Patty Thigpen said her son was “madly in love” with his 7-month-old niece, Stormi.

“It’s a mama’s worst nightmare,” she said.

The sheriff’s office says OHSA was called on Friday and the investigation is ongoing.
