Man arrested for throwing eggs at King Charles III

LONDON — A man was arrested in York after allegedly throwing eggs at King Charles III and Camilla, the queen consort, on Wednesday.

The royal couple had entered York through Micklegate Bar, a medieval gateway where monarchs are typically welcomed into the city, The Associated Press reported.

Witnesses said the suspect shouted “this country was built on the blood of slaves” as he threw eggs and was then restrained by North Yorkshire Police, the BBC reported.

At least three eggs were thrown, none of which hit the king, The Washington Post reported.

Kim Oldfield, who owns a shop across from where it happened, told the BBC that she was watching the king and queen consort when she heard “some booing and eggs flying.”

“I glanced across, [saw] the police just descended on the barrier and tried to drag this chap over the top,” Oldfield told the BBC. “About five eggs he’d managed to send. Camilla sort of flinched a little bit when the booing started but they [police] quelled it really quickly. Just a shame they spoilt what was a lovely moment.”

Photos from the scene show the cracked eggs on the pavement, as well as Charles looking on as police arrested the protester.

Another photo shows officers holding the suspect on the grass. The man, identified only as a 23-year-old, was arrested on suspicion of a public order offense, the AP reported.
