A bat used by hall of fame outfielder Ty Cobb, whose full name was Tyrus Raymond Cobb, has sold for more than $1.07 million.
The bat was used by Cobb during his 1905 rookie season with the Detroit Tigers and he used it to hit his first MLB home run, WDIV reported.
According to the auction listing, the bat still shows the wear and tear from the game, including:
- A crack on the upper handle.
- Ball marks on the barrel.
- Cleat marks on the barrel.
- Possible tape remnants on the lower handle.
The writing on the bat has faded over the years, but it has a vault mark of model C28, which was assigned to Cobb.
Despite the condition, the bat received a PSA/DNA grade of a perfect 10, CBS Sports reported.
Bidding started at $100,000 but it took 24 bids to get to the winning price of $1,074,544.
Cobb was born Dec. 18, 1886, in Narrows, Georgia, according to his biography from the National Baseball Hall of Fame.
He first played with the South Atlantic League as a semipro for several teams before joining the Tigers. He spent 22 years in Detroit before going to Philadelphia and eventually retiring.
Cobb, who was known as The Georgia Peach, set 90 major league records, several of which he still holds, including the highest career batting average of .366 and the most career batting titles at 12.
The outfielder-turned-manager also was inducted into the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 1936. He was part of the first class that included Walter Johnson, Christy Mathewson, Honus Wagner and Babe Ruth, CBS Sports reported.
Cobb died July 17, 1961.
