UGA fans and past/current members of the football program celebrated Matt Stafford reaching the Super Bowl for the first time on Sunday night.
The former Georgia quarterback helped lead the Los Angeles Ram to a 20-17 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Sunday’s NFC Championship.
Stafford, who was traded to the Rams in a blockbuster trade before this season, had a clutch fourth quarter against the 49ers, completing 11 of 14 passes for 121 yards and one touchdown, although he nearly gave the game away on a deep ball that was dropped by a San Francisco defender.
Stafford has now won three playoff games this year, after posting no postseason wins in 12 seasons with the lowly Detroit Lions. Stafford was the No. 1 overall pick by the Lions in 2007, and played with the franchise until this season.
Other former UGA players going to the Super Bowl with the Rams are running back Sony Michel, outside linebacker Leonard Floyd and assistant coach Thomas Brown. The Rams will play the Cincinnati Bengals, who have former UGA offensive lineman Trey Hill on the roster, along with practice-squad members Lamont Gaillard and Elijah Holyfield.
